If you’re experiencing frequent sinus issues, such as infections or difficulty breathing, you may wish to consider balloon sinuplasty. This option is less invasive than surgery and often results in a shorter recovery time. However, you’ll notice the same results from the procedure that you would from surgery. Here at Advanced Ear, Nose, & Throat Associates, we are proud to offer this option to our patients and encourage you to learn more about it.
Why Opt for the Balloon Sinuplasty?
Your doctor might suggest balloon sinuplasty if you have chronic pain associated with issues pertaining to the sinuses. During the procedure, your doctor won’t make any surgical openings as there would be during other types of sinus procedures. You can get back to your normal daily activities after the sinuplasty since there is no surgical invasion. The balloon sinuplasty is an option you might find beneficial if you have tried other treatments or medications with little to no success.
How Does It Work?
To begin the procedure, a local anesthetic is administered approximately 30 to 45 minutes before dilation. After this, an endoscope is inserted through the nasal passage – this is a thin device that has a light and a camera on the end so your doctor can see the sinuses and the issue in need of correction. The endoscope guides tiny balloons through the sinus openings, getting them just where they need to be. Your doctor will then inflate the balloon slowly when it’s in the sinuses. The purpose of inflating the balloon is to push it against the sinus wall to allow for the sinuses to open, which can provide relief from pain, infections, and other issues. The balloon is then removed and the sinuses flushed. An analgesic tablet such as Tylenol can be provided to address any mild discomfort.
